Live your best life in the peace of the forest with the pride & integrity of country living. The land now known as Huger, SC, and the Francis Marion National Forest has a rich history spanning from prehistoric times to the Revolutionary War and beyond. The area, including the present-day national forest, was inhabited by prehistoric Native Americans. During the Revolutionary War, General Francis Marion, known as the "Swamp Fox," used the forest and swamps for strategic advantage, disrupting British supply lines. Following the war, the area became a significant region for rice and cotton plantations. Huger and the Francis Marion National Forest are home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, wild turkey, deer, hogs, foxes, and bears. The forest spans nearly 259,000 acres and offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, ranging from hiking, biking, ATV, motorcycle, and canoe trails to rifle ranges and a boat launch. The Francis Marion National Forest spans the coastal plain of South Carolina and is bounded to the north by the Santee River and to the east by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. Modern-day Huger, South Carolina, is an unincorporated community in Berkeley County. It is named after Isaac Huger, born March 19, 1742. Isaac Huger represented South Carolina in the First Continental Congress. His positions and appointments included service in the Fifth Continental Regiment, Brigadier General of the Southern Army, and elected in 1782 to the South Carolina General Assembly. On September 26, 1789, President George Washington- in his inaugural year appointed him as the first U.S. Marshall of South Carolina. Huger passed away in 1797 due to prior battle injuries and age.
