As of 2016 has a population of estimate of 134,309 just for the city of "Columbia", but most refer to Columbia as the entire area "The Midlands" which also includes the towns mentioned above plus West Columbia, Cayce, Gilbert, Prosperity, Leesburg, and others so including all the smaller surrounding towns makes it closer to 500,000. The city is located about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of the geographic center of the state and was situated there primarily because of the three major rivers that run right through the city: Saluda, Congaree, and Broad Rivers.
