Columbia SC is home to the 10th largest man made lake in the United States. Lake Murray is a 50,000 acres reservoir, and has roughly 500 miles of shoreline located about 30 mins drive from the University of South Carolina. Homes for sale on Lake Murray are fairly affordable for such a beautiful large lake in a large city. The other popular lakes that people come to SC to visit and buy homes are lakes Marion & Moultrie, and lakefront homes here are even more affordable then on Lake Murray because the towns the surround these two very large lakes are still fairly rural. In other words all the other smaller towns close to and around the city of Myrtle Beach. Then there is Kiawah Island Resort, the famous gated luxury golf resort that has hosted two PGA Championships, World Golf Championship, LPGA events, Senior PGA events, and more. Real estate in this opulent luxury community is also some of the most expensive real estate in all of the U.S., and many celebrities, powerful CEOs, and professional athletes have owned homes or do own homes here. There are 7 courses in the community with the famous Ocean Course being the home of the PGA sanctioned events. Wild Dunes Resort was built before Kiawah and was the “impetus” to the inspiration behind Kiawah Island’s developers’ vision, but to the next level. This 1600 acre gated development was originally started in the late 1970s and is still undergoing development to this day, although fairly small as most of the land has been used. There are two stellar golf courses here, one that runs along the intracoastal waterway (Harbor Course), and one that runs partially along the ocean (Links Ocean Course). Mount Pleasant SC (in Charleston), has 4 country club golf communities: Dunes West, Snee Farm, Charleston National, and Rivertowne Country Club all that are public golf courses and none of which require membership. Recently in 2017 Mt Pleasant also annexed in private Bulls Bay golf club about 15 mins drive north in Awendaw SC.
