The Francis Marion National Forest spans the coastal plain of South Carolina and is bounded to the north by the Santee River and to the east by the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. Modern-day Huger, South Carolina, is an unincorporated community in Berkeley County. It is named after Isaac Huger, born March 19, 1742. Isaac Huger represented South Carolina in the First Continental Congress. His positions and appointments included service in the Fifth Continental Regiment, Brigadier General of the Southern Army, and elected in 1782 to the South Carolina General Assembly. On September 26, 1789, President George Washington- in his inaugural year appointed him as the first U.S. Marshall of South Carolina. Huger passed away in 1797 due to prior battle injuries and age.
